What part of the play says that he's a male? For some reason I remember thinking that when I read it, but I think I need to go back and look to see where I got that idea...
I can't remember exactly, I think it might be in the third act and he is referred to as "him." Then I looked up a character summary of Ariel and it also said he was a dude. From the mouth of two or three witnesses. :)
